Brian Jones' mother talks about his childhood, his love for music and his early success with The Rolling Stones.

Part of an early Stones press kit included thoughts and memories from the mothers of each member. Reprinted from a mid sixties issue of "Everybody's" magazine is what Brian Jones' mother, Mrs. Louisa Jones, had to say:

"He sometimes talked of becoming a dentist, and we were all behind him, especially when Brian did so well at school. He passed nine subjects in his G.C.E. at Ordinary level when he was only sixteen, and two years later gained advanced-level chemistry and physics. He was quite clever and was always full of fun and very attached to his sister, Barbara."

Brian's constant companion was his family's cat, Rollader. "I have no idea why he chose that name. We had her for ten years and she died when Brian was fifteen. He was terribly upset. He has always been terribly fond of cats. He likes all pets, but cats are his favorites. He has another one now which he keeps in London. It is a manx cat, given to him by a fan when the Stones were in the Isle of Man."

About music, she said; "At first, I thought it was only a hobby. He had always been keen on music and started piano lessons when he was six or seven. When he was twelve, Brian joined his school orchestra and learned clarinet, but I don't think he has played that much since he left. He was keen on several sports at school, particularly table tennis and judo. One thing he really excelled at was diving. He wasn't particularly interested in swimming, but was constantly charging up the ladder to the high board."

Mrs. Jones doesn't think success with The Rolling Stones has altered Brian much. "If anything, he seems more helpful when he is at home these days. Before, he would help with the washing up on a Sunday and things like that, but now he is even better - even making cups of tea. Of course, I am very glad that he has done so well. But, as a typical mother, I think it would have been nice if he had become a dentist."
