 Issue 18

One of the founding fathers of British Blues, Kim Simmonds is a true pioneer whose contributions to the evolution of Blues-Rock, as the founder and driving force behind Savoy Brown, are as critical to rock history as fellow UK luminaries like Clapton, Page, Beck and Green. As an exclusive member in this elite group of British guitarists, Simmonds' influence was critical in molding the Rock and Roll landscape of the late sixties and seventies.

With a superb body of work that spans four decades, Simmonds' love for the Blues remains as strong today as it was when he first discovered the magic of Blues masters like Earle Hooker and Willie Dixon as a teenager. A true believer in the power of music, his excitement and passion as a musician, performer and fan, comes through in near palpable waves.

Simmonds continues to challenge himself, not only with Savoy Brown but as a solo artist, as he expands both personal and musical boundaries with his second solo release, "Blues Like Midnight" which is slated for release April 1st, 2001.

In part one of "A Conversation With Kim Simmonds", he takes us through his formative years and cites the influences and musicians who helped instill within him an inextinguishable enthusiasm and fire for the Blues that continues to burn strongly today. Simmonds also explains the joys and pains of musical creation, describes both the freedom and challenges presented when recording and performing outside of Savoy Brown and the delights of his current acoustic tour.

Incredibly modest and always quick to credit others, his recollections of his remarkable career are vivid and punctuated with wonderful anecdotes. We're sure you are going to enjoy reading and listening to "A Conversation With Kim Simmonds".

Next month we continue our conversation as Kim Simmonds recalls the Blues explosion that overtook London, Savoy Brown's early days, his love, and initial fear, for performing live (some great stories!) and his experiences working with Chris Youlden, memories of Lonesome Dave and a special moment with the legendary Willie Dixon. Also, Simmonds recalls the stories behind some of the classic Savoy Brown songs such as Hellbound Train, Mr. Downchild, Second Try, All I Can Do and more. All this, next month.
