John Lennon and George Harrison become the first two Beatles to experience
LSD as a result of their drinks being spiked at a party held by George’s
dentist. LSD is not yet illegal and had become the recreational drug of
choice and was seen as the latest “thing.”

The first gig by the Warlocks takes place at Magoo’s Pizza Parlor in Menlo Park. At the time the Warlocks, who later changed their name to Grateful Dead, consisted of Bob Weir (guitar), Bill Kreutzmann (drums), Ron “Pigpen” McKernan (keyboards), Dana Morgan Jr. (bass) and Jerry Garcia (guitar). The band’s musical style initially borrowed much from the Rolling Stones with its electric R&B style.

The Marquee Club in London in London features John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers and the first appearance of the Amboy Dukes on Thursday the 16th. The Amboy Dukes would play the marquee another five times

Teens ‘n’ Twenties present The Yardbirds, Harbinger Complex, Peter Wheat & the Breadmen and the Just V on Thursday the 25th at the Carousel Ballroom, San Francisco. The Carousel used to be called the El Patio Ballroom and was located on the second floor, above a car dealership on the Southwest corner of market and Van Ness. This show also took place on the 26th August at the Rollerena, San Leandro.

-Pink Floyd, The Equals and Two of Each play Saturday the 18th at the California Ballroom, Dunstable, Bedfordshire.

-Middle Earth re-opens on Saturday the 27th at the Roundhouse with a performance from Traffic
-The Free Concert in Hyde Park on Friday the 27th features Traffic, the Nice, Pretty Things, Action and Junior Eyes

The Electric Theatre presents Muddy Waters and Fleetwood Mac on Friday and Saturday the 3rd and 4th at the Kinetic Playground, 4812 Clark Street in Chicago, Illinois

-King Crimson makes their U.S. debut on Thursday the 23rd at Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont. Bandleader Robert Fripp describes the crowd as “a peace-and-love crowd, sitting dreamily in lotus positions, probably expecting psychedelic folk or some such, after our first number there was dead silence. I looked up. The audience looked as if it had been squashed by a steamroller.” King Crimson would form one of the core bands of the emerging Progressive Rock genre
